Case 25

A 65 years old male presented to medicine OPD with chief complaints of productive cough, and difficulty in breathing. Other complaints were fatigue, myalgia, nausea and occasional abdominal pain and diarrhoea. On examination the patient was febrile, had tachycardia and increased respiratory rate.

  1. This is a case of pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The organism is catalase negative. Definitive identification is made by Optochin sensitivity testing (sensitive) and bile solubility test (bile soluble).
